September 14, 2007

Well Hello World!

Hopefully I will be posting photos & progress of several Electric Guitar projects I have in the works.

Little Mods to existing guitars, complete Body Builds. I don't do Necks, Yet!

1st Up: Squier Esprit

A new bridge pickup.
After trying several different pickups in the Esprit.
I decided to, well cook my own.

I am not talking about winding one from the ground up mind you,
but taking bits & pieces and combining them.

Manufacturer: Guitar Fetish(GFS), 2- Lil Killer’s @15K
(I’ll call these LK1 and LK2)
Name of new pickup: Superlead
(Sorry Soldano I am only making one of these for myself).
Other Names Considered:
Hyperlead, Megalead, Screamer, Death Metal Overkill, etc, etc, etc….

How About "SuperL" ???
I like "SuperL"!

I am going to mount 2 of the LK’s on a Humbucker Baseplate.
2-DPDT Slide Switches
1-4P5T-RS (4-Pole 5-Throw Rotary Switch).

The LK’s unfortunately have that “Stupid Little Tab”
on the side that holds the wire Leads.

Well that “Stupid Little Tab” HAS TO GO!!!!!!!

Which means I will have to remove the wire leads
! And very carefully saw off those “Stupid Little Tabs” !
And then remount the leads.

1-Nickle-Silver Baseplate from StewMac.com
2-LK”s from GFS
1-Sheet of Fiberglass.

Cut the fiberglass to fit down on the Baseplate with holes in it to get the wire Leads through.

“Magnet” orientation on the Baseplate:
LK1 Bridge Side = South-North
LK2 Neck Side = North-South
So that the two North Poles are facing each other when mounted on the Baseplate

This will push the magnetic field even higher.
So the "SuperL" can be mounted lower and still get a decent sound and more room for my Pick.
I play right on top of the Bridge pickup, Nice and Sharp.

Next: 10-Ton epoxy.
Fiberglass to baseplate
LK1 & LK2 to Fiberglass
(fish leads through first).

Have not made up my mind yet:
Chrome Cover On ???
Chrome Cover Off ???

Next: LK1 & LK2 get a DPDT Slide Switch for Series/Parallel selection.
The slide switches will be mounted in the Rear Cover Plate.

Next: From the slide switches we are off to the 4P5T-RS.

With the 4P5T-RS switch.
The "SuperL" will get the following:
1 = LK1 Alone
2 = LK1 & LK2 in Series, Out Of Phase
3 = LK1 & LK2 In Parallel, In Phase
4 = Lk1 & LK2 In Series, In Phase (A Super Bucker)
5 = LK2 Alone
With the 2-Slide Switches for Series/Parallel.
I am going to get a Whole Lot-O-Sound!
Out of a single humbcker sized PUP!

I have not decided yet if I am going to remove the Lead Tone Control or Drill a “New Hole”
behind the Lead Tone Control.

Next the Esprit gets a Stereo output Jack.

Superlead to Amp #1.

Rhythm pickup to Amp #2

Rythm Pickup is a:
1970 “Bill Lawrence L-500 Rhythm @12K (BITCHING!!!)

Heck I might remove the 3-Way toggle and put the Rotary Switch in there.

Just means I have to rewire the volume pots and use them as a Lead and Rythm Select.

---

I have done this mod on a Jay Turser Tele-Thinline with Great Results.

Mind you this is with 2-GFS li Puncher’s mounted in the standard Tele positions.
Not Kissing each other!

Rock On !!!
